Art Exhibit: The Parting by Emily Merryweather

The Parting by Emily Merryweather

On Wednesday, March 29th, Curt Thompson gave a talk and began a conversation on shame, neuroscience, and the gospel (view recording here). In conjunction with this event, the Study Center is hosting an art exhibit with local painter Emily Merryweather . Her art will be on display in the newly renovated Study Center from April 10-14, and there will be a meet-the-artist event on Wednesday from 2-4 pm. We invite you to come see Emily's art, hear about her work, and keep the conversation going.

“Hear, O Lord, when I cry aloud; be gracious to me and answer me!  You have said, “Seek my face.” My heart says to you, “Your face, Lord, do I seek.  Hide not your face from me”. Psalm 27:8-9

Hours

  • Art Exhibit: Monday - Friday, April 10 - 14, 8 am - 9 pm

  • Meet the Artist: Wednesday, April 12, 2 - 4 pm

Artist Statement

“These paintings explore the connection between human despondency and the original loss of the physical presence of God. The dismay displayed by the archetypal Adam and Eve in each painting images the origin of human anguish at the loss of intimacy with the Being who caused their existence.

These works explore the time before the twisting, writhing struggle for survival sets in.  Here is the moment of darkened wonder when stillness rolls over and begins rifling the world for the meaning of existence.  This is the original moment of “Weltshmertz”, an historical word without English correspondent, meaning world pain connected to the sensation of the insufficiency of existence.  When God became hidden, this sensation of insufficiency penetrated the human heart and made its home there.”
