Democracy of the Dead: The Role of Tradition in Contemporary Higher Ed

  • North Carolina Study Center 203 Battle Lane Chapel Hill, NC, 27514 United States (map)

GK Chesterton famously once suggested that “Tradition is the democracy of the dead. It means giving a vote to the most obscure of all classes: our ancestors.”

The contemporary university places great value in scientific advancement, technological development and cultural progress. In light of this, adherence to any form of ‘tradition’ is often viewed as suspiciously retrograde at best, or worse is prohibited as an intellectually compromising rejection of open-mindedness and free-thinking.

What role does tradition have to play in today’s University? Is adherence to a particular religious, intellectual or moral tradition an intellectual liability?

Join us for a lunchtime interview and conversation with Dr. Molly Worthen, Associate Professor of History at UNC, as we explore these questions together and more.
